Hey friends! I’m excited that today is my day to share with you my Splendid Sampler block! Have you been following along with all of the amazing free block patterns from designers around the world?
There are SO MANY people stitching together for this sampler, it is mind boggling! There are over 21,000 members of the Splendid Sampler Facebook group– WOW!
You can sign up to have the block patterns delivered directly to your inbox by going to the Splendid Sampler site run by Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson. You can see all the Splendid Sampler blocks so far on this page along with answers to FAQ. It’s such a diverse group that you are sure to find many blocks that appeal to you. You can stitch all of them, some of them or one or two of them!
Pat and Jane asked me to design a block that incorporated appliqué and hexagons immediately popped in my head. I appliquéd my hexies directly to the 6.5″ x 6.5″ block in a flower shape representing the sense of community that Sew South Retreat embodies.
**You can find the pdf block pattern on the Splendid Sampler site.
Below you’ll find pictures depicting the process of glue basting hexies. If you prefer to stitch yours with thread, be sure to check out my Intro to Hexagons video tutorial. I basted mine using a fine glue tip. You can also use a washable glue stick. 🙂
Cut your fabric 1/4″ larger than the hexie template on all sides. The template is included in the pattern pdf.
Use glue to baste hexies or use thread.
Make the hexies.
Next, let the glue dry, press the hexies then remove the papers. Now stitch the hexies in place on the fabric square. A blind hem foot is great for this! Use a bit of glue to hold them in place or pin them.
You’re all set! Enjoy your appliquéd block!
I’ll be looking for yours on social media. Be sure to post it and include #thesplendidsampler.
