She has a heart of gold that Jill. I’m certain you’ll think so too. Today’s Meet the Maker feature is the big hearted and super talented Jill Halimi and you’re in for a rainbow of goodness.
Whimsical Wooden Hearts
Last Fall I stumbled across Jill’s adorable whimsical wooden hearts while scrolling through Instagram. It is likely that I found her from @canfieldhouse or @selahsigns but I can’t be certain which of these friends led me to Jill. At any rate, I was smitten from the start. I love color and I have a fondness for hearts and when I saw Jill’s rainbow colored wooden hearts, I was in love! (Psst: there’s a giveaway. Keep reading!)
I was over the moon when she agreed to swap with me and just as delighted when my very own tiny hearts arrived. Sweet Jill made a special set of wooden buttons, and I could hardly wait to put hers to good use. I had the exact shade of peachy-pink fabric (how awesome was that!) and made Jill a pretty pouch to showcase her pink heart. We were both delighted with the outcome.
If you follow me on Instagram, I’m sure you’ve seen my collection of whimsical wooden hearts. I love to include them in pics of my project bags in my shop. A handful of colorful hearts just makes you smile indeed.
I’m excited to introduce y’all to Jill. She truly has a wonderful heart, a generous and encouraging nature and so much creative talent. You’ll absolutely love her work.
Meet Jill Halimi! @jillhalimi
Jill, tell us a bit about yourself:
Hi! I’m Jill and I live in Minnesota in the Twin Cities in a 1913 home with my hubby and our 14 year old son. By day, I care for families whose loved one has died and graciously became an organ, eye and/or tissue donor. Woodworking is my hobby that I squeeze in any chance I get!
What do you create?
I create colorful wood art. I’m all about simple shapes that shine with imperfections! I’ve seemed to find my niche with hearts, flowers and rainbows yet am looking forward to trying new things and learning new paint techniques. Whatever I make, it has to be simple as I don’t have patience for intricate work! I love a rustic, whimsical distressed piece that shows texture and dimension.
Where do you create?
My tool of choice is the scroll saw, which I use in our garage. I cut and sand my pieces out there, which can be challenging during Minnesota winters. From there, I move indoors to our dining room table to paint and finish my pieces. I typically photograph my work outside to capture the natural light. My dream, like everyone, is to have a dedicated workshop where I can do everything in one space and truly make it my own. It would be filled with color for inspiration, natural sunlight and of course, heat for the winter months!
Who or what inspires you?
I love nothing more than a chippy wood piece, whether it be an aged dresser or hutch or old shiplap from a decrepit farmhouse or barn. The layers of paint and natural wear of Mother Nature get me every time. Those pieces tell a story – the more distressed the better the story!
What are your words of advice for living a creative life?
My advice would be that it’s never too late to start. I’ve only discovered this creative side of myself in the last year and truly have a hard time believing it was there before then. I never, ever considered myself even remotely creative until now. I’m a firm believer in things happening for a reason, exactly when they’re supposed to happen so I’m going with it! And I’m not looking back, only forward!
What other makers do you admire and think we would enjoy following too?
Ooohhh, right now I’m totally crushing on mixed media artists like Dori from @patrickdori and Kristi from @soul_positive. I love what they’re doing with their layers and color and all their messy goodness. I like messy! A lot!
Any parting words?
Thank you for inviting me to your blog! This maker community is living proof that there are incredibly kind people out there who want nothing more than to lift one another up. I’m thrilled to be a small part of something so encouraging and inspiring.
